Lack of Compassion - Question 2

Post by Admin on Fri Apr 08, 2016 10:54 am

Donald Trump seems to lack compassion and his speech is oftentimes offensive. Some people believe Donald Trump is direct in his speech, rather than offensive. Defend, compare, and contrast Trump's offensive speech and seemingly lack of compassion to the Misfit' s very direct speech and obvious lack of compassion.
Consider the Quote from the Misfit in the text: "She would have been a good woman...if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life" (Norton page 481, para. 140), then consider Donald Trump's remarks to supporters at a rally in the links below where he seems to encourage violence.

Both the Misfit and Donald Trump were direct and offensive in the things that they said. Donald Trump makes smart remarks against races, nationalities, and even ones that are in relation to terrorists. He directs his words to specific groups which makes it direct. The Misfit was offensive we he mentioned that the grandmother would have been better off he she'd been shot every minute of her life. Both Trump and the Misfit are offensive and direct.

Donald Trump does seem to lack compassion in most of his speeches, and he very offensive with his type of language. He really relates to the Misfit, but the Misfit is a murderer so his lack of compassion is even more foreboding. Donald Trump literally says "He's not a war hero -- he's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured." In this he is referring to Sen. John McCain being held in Vietnam for more than 5 years during the war. Trump shows his lack of compassion by verbally attacking a senator's war contributions, as if he were condemning McCain's efforts towards our nation. It seems like Trump was making an assumption that being captured was not valid enough to be classified as a war hero. The Misfit is very direct and then indirect at moments, such as his last line he spoke to the old grandma, "there never was a body that give the undertaker a tip", was very indirect. The Misfit did not directly state that it doesn't matter if you give your money or not, I am going to kill you.

Donald Trump and The Misfit both seem to have a lack in compassion in their speech, while Donald Trump shows it in his actions as well, The Misfit shows compassion sparingly. They say exactly how the feel and what's on their mind. Whether Donald Trump's comments are offensive are not, that depends on who is being asked and what's their stance on the issues that's being spoken about. Non supporters feel his lack of compassion through his supporters, as they are often violently thrown out of his rallies and called offensive names. The Misfit's comments aren't offensive, yet very blunt and straight forward in honesty. In "A Good Man is Hard to Find" when he's speaking to the grandmother, she asks him would he shoot an old lady, and he responds that he would hate to have to. He answered her question straight forward with complete honesty. He shows compassion sparingly when he decides to kill the family separate, instead of murdering them in front of each other execution style.

When it comes to Donald Trump, he is very direct in his speeches, but he is also being very offensive, stereotypical, and racially profiling the Hispanic community. According to CNN, when Trump stated his views on Immigration and the Hispanic population, he said "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best... They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people." When referring to the Misfit, he tells the a boy "She would of been a good woman, if it had been someone there to shoot her every minute of her life." He is being direct towards the grandmother to show how she always put herself above others, but she had her flaws, (morally and literally), but she had failed to own up to them and see the error of her ways. (Norton, 481, para. 140).

Based on the quote, "She would have been a good woman...if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life" (Norton page 481, para. 140) The Misfit has absolutely no regard for human life or the feelings of individuals in general. This shows that The Misfit has no compassion for the lives he has taken or the lives he will take. I feel as though The Misfit is not going out of his way to terrorize the feelings of others, I feel it means that he will get what he wants regardless of life or death.

According to The Huffington Post, Trump first tweeted statistics that broke down New York City shooting suspects by race and ethnicity, citing Fox’s Bill O’Reilly as a source. Minutes later he tweeted again, correlating race and ethnicity with violent crime across the country. In response, media critic Eric Deggans wrote in the Tampa Bay Times: “There is no doubt that violent crime is a serious problem in communities of color. But connecting it to race in such a blunt and unfair fashion seems more about blaming certain kinds of people than solving the problem.” I feel that this shows that Trump is being straightforward in his reasoning and not necessarily going out of his way to offend others.

The Misfit lacked compassion from the very beginning. He's a murderer, and escaped prisoner, there's no compassion in his heart what so ever. His statement to the lady about someone being here to shoot her every moment of her life was not an example of his lack of compassion this was simply him stating his mind. Donald Trump however is not direct, he is blatantly offensive. He is running for president so therefore his words and actions represent an entire nation. So he can't just say “When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending the best,” he said during the announcement. “They're not sending you, they're sending people that have lots of problems and they're bringing those problems. They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. They're rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they're telling us what we're getting." That's not being direct it's flat out offensive.

(Norton page 481, para. 140)

This is a great comparison and claim based on the argument. Please provide textual (Norton) and contextual (outside source) to substantiate your response. - Ms. Walker

Both Donald Trump and The Misfit are offensive and lack compassion. According to the HuffPost, Donald Trump said, "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They are rapists. And some, i assume, are good people." Mexico is sort of a poor country with a high unemployment rate. He accuses the Hispanics of being rapists. Trump seems to have no compassion or feelings for those that are less fortunate than he is. The Misfit made a very offensive comment about the grandmother when he said, "She would of been a good woman if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life." (Norton page 481, para.140). He also didn't feel any sympathy for the family as Bobby Lee and Hiram killed them off.

The Misfit and Donald Trump both lack compassion. In the book The misfit says "She would have been a good woman...if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life" (Norton page 481, para. 140) meaning she would've been a good one had she never existed. He has no regrets about killing her at all. Donald Trump said to the TWC News “But I’m gonna make it bigger and better and stronger than ever before. We are going to Make America Great Again.” What he really means is that if he can eliminate the other races that he feels are hindering America, like Hispanics and Africans, then America would be "great again". He has no compassion during his speeches for people of those races and how it offends them, just like The Misfit doesn't care about what he says to the people he murder.

Donald Trump's speech changes. He has made statements that are direct and some that are blatantly offensive. He has even done both at once, but he often makes statements that are difficult to classify. The Misfit, on the other hand, has a clear and discernible lack of compassion, which is most exhibited in the story when he groundlessly murders an entire family. (incomplete)

The Misfit said if the woman was to die everyday of her life then she would have been a decent woman (Norton page 481, para. 140). Donald Trump at his rallies encourages the violence to get his way. Making it ok for his supporters to assault people. “I don’t know if I’ll do the fighting myself, or if other people will.” This is a quote that i took from one of Trumps speeches. Stating that other people will do his dirty work. "Seriously, OK? Just knock the hell — I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise. I promise. They won’t be so much, because the courts agree with us too — what’s going on in this country.” This is unacceptable our county is fighting each other instead of the enemy. Donald says he wants to make America Great again, so why tear it apart State by State and soon we will be the weakest country to all other countries!
