Religious Preferences - Question 1 Empty Religious Preferences - Question 1

Post by Admin Fri Apr 08, 2016 10:46 am

Both Donald Trump and the Misfit have a knowledge of religion . Trump says he is a Christian and the Misfit said, "Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead" (Norton, page 480, para. 134).
Are they hypocritical in their manipulation (or use) of religion, since they both make religious references to their advantage?

Post by XDHall Fri Apr 08, 2016 11:02 am

The Misfit never used his knowledge of religion for manipulation; he used it for motivation. However, the grandma in "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" tried to use religion as persuasion to escape an all but certain death. He states, "Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead and He shouldn't have done it. He thown everything off balance (Norton, 480, para. 134)."

Yes, bottom line is they made it aware that they are familiar with the bible and know what is meant by the bible, yet they still decide to go against what it says .

The misfit directly uses religion to influence both himself and others and to justify his actions. However, Trump does this indirectly. An example is how some of Trumps voters only vote for him because of his Christian background.

Post by TMoore Mon Apr 11, 2016 10:45 am

Trump is very hypocritical towards his religion. He says that no one should question a man's faith when he is talking to the Pope, yet he questions his competitor, he says "How can Ted Cruz be an evangelical Christian when he lies so much and is so dishonest?"(According to ChristianToday.com) The Misfit proves he knows information in the bible, by saying "Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead."(Norton,480, para.135) Although he uses that information to prove that there is no pleasure in the world, but that doesn't justify a means to murder. Both men manipulate their knowledge of the bible to their advantage.

Post by LatoyaSullivan Mon Apr 11, 2016 10:49 am

Donald Trump was a hypocrite when it came to religion. Donald Trump claims to be a Christian but goes against the basic Christian law, such as the ten commandments. In the commandments, it states that thou shall not kill. Donald trump clearly goes against this at his rallies when violence occurs which has a chance of leading to someone killing another. The violence doesn't seem to make a change in Trump and what he says at the rallies. The Misfit on the other hand did not manipulate others with religion for his own good. He had no shame or guilt in killing the family.

Yes, both are hypocritical towards their use of religion. Trump and The Misfit know that much of society is familiar with the bible and they choose to use the bible against their "victims". Trump claims to be a Christian but condones and accepts violence at his rallies. The Misfit used his knowledge of the bible to rebut against the grandmother and her reasons for why she should not be killed. He was remorseless towards his actions and just used religion as a joke in this situation .

Religious Preferences - Question 1 Empty Re: Religious Preferences - Question 1

Post by ZacarriyaHumphries Mon Apr 11, 2016 11:05 am

Trump mentions his religious preferences within an interview he had with CBN, saying he is a “Sunday church person” and that he has had “a good relationship with the church over the years.”. He perceives to be a Christian, however he does hypocritical things such as not doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. Trump says in one of his speeches " Punch em in the face. I'll pay all the legal fees". This is not the Godly way to be. The Misfit never says what his religious belief is. However, he does mention some knowledge of the bible. "Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead" (O'Connor, page 480, para. 134). The Misfit manipulates words from the bible to believe that his wrong doings were justifiable. He believes that since Jesus was the only One to raise the dead then killing her wouldn't matter. The Misfit is not hypocritical. Although he knows parts of the bible, it doesn't mean that he is a Christian and lives by the bible.

Religious Preferences - Question 1 Empty Re: Religious Preferences - Question 1

Post by Saad_Almighty Mon Apr 11, 2016 11:08 am

I feel as though The Misfit does not use his biblical knowledge to be hypocritical. He simply references The Bible's text to disprove the notion that he would not kill the grandmother. He never states a position in regards to anything based on his quotation of The Bible nor does he use religion to his advantage, he already has the advantage by wielding a firearm. (Norton, page 480, para. 134).

As stated by CNN, Donald Trump quoted Proverbs saying, "never bend to envy." I feel as though in this instance Donald Trump was using his knowledge of The Bible as a potential motive of gaining popularity among Christian voters who may have been wavering due to the questionable religious or mortal values that Donald Trump may abide by. This means that Trump does quote The Bible for advantageous reasons. I find no reason to confirm that Trump is being hypocritical in his quotation of the text.

Post by jncyole6531 Mon Apr 11, 2016 11:09 am

Donald Trump is hypocritical because he says how he is a Christian and how The Bible is "the book", yet disobeys the basic laws of the bible. He tells people to go out and punch each other in face for disagreeing but who is he to judge other people's opinions. The Misfit isn't hypercritical at all, he just knows the words of the bible. He doesn't care about being Christian because he keeps murdering people. He wasn't telling the grandmother to obey all Christian Law, he just ensures her that he has knowledge of the Bible.

Post by XIzzyDaDonX Mon Apr 11, 2016 11:09 am

Donald Trump and The Misfit are both hypocritical. The Misfit is hypocritical because he says "Jesus thrown everything off balance.", referring to how he believes it what was wrong of Jesus to raise the dead and interfere with the "circle of life". However, The Misfit is murdering people without valid reason, ending people's lives before their time. Donald Trump is hypocritical because he portrays himself in the media to be a man of god who "collects bibles". In the bible it says "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged..." (Matthew 7:1-5). Donald Trump has made many public judgmental statements, going against the previous bible verse, especially when he states that "all Mexicans are rapists and murderers".

Religious Preferences - Question 1 Empty Re: Religious Preferences - Question 1

Post by janiasmith24 Mon Apr 11, 2016 11:09 am

Trump is very hypocritical when it comes to religion. According to MSNBC Trump was saying whenever he needed forgiveness he never asked God. Trump stated, "I never bring God into that picture. I don't." In this press conference, he never mentioned having a relationship with God or demonstrated the role that faith plays in his life. He clearly does not embrace Catholic values. He wants to band Muslim immigrants which is a step out of Christianity. But he "believes in God" and "collects Bibles." The Misfit is not hypocritical. Just because he has knowledge of the bible doesn't means that he is a Christian man and practices it.

Religious Preferences - Question 1 Empty Unjustified Claims

I would like to argue that the Misfit never actually used religion to justify his actions. Yes, he had openly criticized Jesus's actions in saying,"Jesus thown everything off balance..." Pg. 480, but this is of his own opinion. Donald Trump is the only hypocrite in this comparison because his own personal claim of Christianity, is countered by his stating that people in relation to terrorists are just as guilty as the actual terrorist. Trump thinks these people should be eliminated, but doesn't the bible say love thy enemy?

Religious Preferences - Question 1 Empty Re: Religious Preferences - Question 1

I would not say that they are both hypocritical, the Misfit is hypocritical because he states, facts about the bible and Jesus, but then turns around and goes against everything that was previously stated and murders an old lady. The Misfit stated that Jesus threw everything off balance by raising the dead but he's doing the same by killing someone, murder is not the natural way of life. Donald Trump, I believe, is not hypocritical but rather a devious manipulator. He's not the fore runner in the presidential race for nothing. He knows how to get in the mind's of the masses to manipulate them into supporting him by exploiting things like religion and their underlying wants. According to a news website called Who Runs Gov "Before Trump’s presidential bid, he wasn’t closely associated with religion. Since entering the Republican primary, where evangelical voters hold out sized sway, Trump has promoted his Christianity, holding high-profile meetings with evangelical pastors and bringing a family bible and first communion photo to interviews and campaign rallies. He identifies as a Presbyterian."

How did The Misfit in the story make us aware of his familiarity with the Bible and/or religion but yet made a decision to "go against what it says?"

There are grammatical error within your post. "The Bible" should be capitalized since it is the title of a book. Also "the" should be placed before "bottom line" so that the sentence sounds more complete. - Grammar Police
